Getting my NC native list from here Recommended Native Species
Bee Balm ,the native variety for NC is latin Monarda didyma ,common names (bergamot, scarlet beebalm, scarlet monarda, Oswego tea, or crimson beebalm)
Its medicinal uses include expelling worms, and for treating gas, fever and stomach ailments. (Lamb/Rhynard) The name Oswego Tea comes from the fact that the leaves were used for a tea by the Oswego Indains of New York. Early settlers also used the plant for this purpose when regular tea was scarce.
The name Beebalm comes from the folk use of crushed leaves to soothe bee stings , I can testify this works!!
Although this is generally regarded as an alien plant, there is a native variety, A. lanulosa, which grows here .
Latin name: Achillea millefolium L.,
(A. lanulosa). Is native to NC
There are many varieties out there , I have slowly been collecting as many as I can . I will try to post some ASAP.
Name: Yarrow Achillea millefolium - a.k.a. stanchweed, soldier's woundwort, and sanguinary - helps stop bleeding.
( Arrow-root, bloodwort, greenarrow, milfoil, nosebleed, sneezewort, thousand-leaf, yallow )
If you sustain a cut or laceration, you can administer first aid by flushing the wound with povidone iodine, then treating it with yarrow. for more info http://www.ncwildflower.org/index.php/plants/details/achillea-millefolium/
